It's hardly hyperbolic to say that this year was a pretty huge one for digital publishing and book futures and I suspect more is in store for us in 2011. What tremendous technology or idea or format will be the game changer for the coming year? Who knows? Maybe the game is done changing and now we're all scrambling to catch up. I doubt it.
We at if:book have our own huge year to ponder over the holidays and we'll be spending plenty of time next year writing and presenting at every opportunity. I've listed a few of them below.
if:book Essays is a series of essays contain in-depth opinion and analysis on book futures from Australian writers, publishers and cross-media specialists. The ten essays will be published first here at futureofthebook.org.au and then compiled into a handy all-in-one digital volume at the end of the year.
The Reader: exploring the future of reading in the 21st Century will be an open one-day symposium culminating in a public keynote lecture and reception. The Reader will explore current and emerging issues in reading culture, including:
- the role of libraries and booksellers in the digital age
- the networked reader: the emergence of social reading
- fostering literacy in an age of change
- e-book lending and public libraries
Bookcamp is a one-day unconference, modeled after events previously held in London and Toronto. Rather than a centrally-programmed, top-down symposium, the unconference model is a one-day, open, user-generated conversation where participants choose the agenda, forming breakup groups to discuss and potentially create future book technologies. The event is for authors, typographers, cover designers, technologists, gamers, booksellers, literary agents, publishers and geeks to consider how storytelling can be supported or transformed by new media.
The Amplified Author is a suite of tools, events and services to help Australian writers gain practical skills and knowledge of digital publishing and online marketing. It includes both live and online courses in publishing ebooks, digital media production and author promotion online. The Amplified Author will also publish guides and case studies for download and provide consultations and referrals to individual writers seeking advice about specific creative projects.
And there's more where that came from, so keep an eye on the site in the new year. We'll be taking a break until the new year when we will finally launch the new web site interface and blog (promise!).
